Aalborg Engineering: Customised Industrial Boilers for Optimal Efficiency
Understanding energy
From the beginning of its existence, Aalborg Engineering’s mission has been to deliver customised industrial boiler plants to customers in Europe and the Middle East, and to be recognised as a lifetime partner by its clients.
To achieve these ambitions, the company focuses on its core values and on integrating customer feedback into its practices, and, at the same time, ensures that its processes and product optimisation remain at the centre of attention.
At the heart of Aalborg Engineering’s product programme is the ability to customise boiler solutions and meet customer requirements based on proven technology and experience. Its package boilers are based on reliable solutions and it is possible to adapt and implement special features to these products, which is important to the individual customer and his plant.
A package boiler or industrial boiler is a standalone application that gets its energy from an integrated burner that, in Aalborg’s design, is fuelled by gas or oil. The package boiler is capable of generating large steam outputs at a high temperature and pressure and of operating with variable loads and has a short start up/ response time.
There are many applications for a package boiler: among others, the boiler can be used to generate process steam for industrial or chemical processes, or as a power generator in combination with a steam turbine. The package boiler can be used as a peak load boiler, as a supplement to alternative power/heat or steam supply, or as an emergency generator that kicks in when other supplies fails.
The company also offers Heat Recovery Steam Generators (HRSG). An HRSG is a boiler that gets energy from a hot gas source. It could be the exhaust gas from a gas turbine, diesel engine or process plant. There are several applications for HRSG boilers, with the two most common ones being combined cycle power plants (CCPP) and cogeneration plants.
In a CCPP, everything focuses on electricity production. The boiler is designed to produce steam for a steam turbine. This increases the overall efficiency of the plant. For small-tomedium size gas turbines the efficiency goes up to approximately 55 per cent.
In a cogeneration plant the processes are similar to the CCPP but the HRSG has a heat exchange module incorporated that also generates heat. This allows for a much lower final outlet temperature of the exhaust gas, thus increasing the overall efficiency up to and above 90 per cent. The heat generated is commonly used for process heating or district heating/cooling, supplying a cheap solution compared to other heating/cooling processes.
With its SteamGen product range Aalborg Engineering can customise any complete boiler or heat recovery plant with all relevant types of equipment. SteamGen 4 is an industrial package boiler, SteamGen 6 is a high-fired HRSG, SteamGen 8 is an HRSG for combined-cycle power plant, and SteamGen 10 is an HRSG for industrial process gas auxiliary systems.
The technology from Aalborg is in demand in a variety of industries – in the oil and gas sector for example, the company works with such respected names as Qatar Shell, with whom it signed a contract in 2006 to supply two HP auxiliary steam boilers for the onshore gas to liquids complex of the Pearl GTL project at Ras Laffan City in Qatar. The design and engineering activities commenced in July 2006 based on a letter of intent, and the contract covers design, procurement, production and delivery of two gas fired boiler plants.
Another example of an oil and gas client that is using Aalborg’s technology is Oil Refineries Ltd (ORL). Aalborg supplied a natural gas and refinery gas fired auxiliary boiler for ORL’s Haifa Refinery in Haifa, Israel in 2007.
As the boiler shall be capable of conversion to turbine exhaust gas firing in the future, the SteamGen 6 HRSG was selected for the project. The specific SteamGen 6 is designed to suit three different gas turbines (Siemens SGT 800, GE LM6000 and RR Trent) and is equipped with a grid burner system, which is designed for fresh air firing and (the future) supplementary firing mode. The contract covers design, procurement, production and supply of the auxiliary boiler with gas burner and combustion air systems.
Each individual boiler design from Aalborg is unique in its own way and offers the level of customisation, know-how, flexibility, efficiency, environmental protection, installation, operation and maintenance required for each individual plant.
As previously noted, Aalborg Engineering strives to work in a true win-win partnership with its customers. It does this by providing them with knowledge, expertise and the most efficient solution in the energy industry. Proximity to customers and markets, optimisation of knowhow and experience, proven technology, excellent business practices, and long-term co-operation with pre-selected and well-known suppliers, are all very important aspects of this partnership philosophy.
The company’s slogan ‘Understanding Energy’ is more than just words. It is the sum total of its beliefs, values and conduct. At the same time, it is an expression of the fact that it considers itself a knowledge-based company. Many years of experience combined with a well-developed product program enables Aalborg to advise its customers in all aspects of a project, in order to reach the most appropriate solution.
