Celebrating its 25th anniversary, Alliance Technical Group is changing the world with people, process and technology

The first half of 2025 has brought innumerable changes to the oil and gas industry: increased supply, lower prices, and increased volatility from global and political uncertainty. One thing, however, has not changed, and that’s environmental expectations. Whilst the Trump administration’s executive orders look to speed up permitting and delay some methane regulations, continued public sentiment supporting clean air and water, as well as global industry standards like OGMP 2.0, mean that environmental expectations on oil and gas companies have never been greater.

That’s where Alliance Technical Group (Alliance) steps in. Founded in 2000 as a small stack testing company, Alliance has steadily grown from those humble origins to the leading pure-play environmental compliance testing, monitoring, and solutions company in North America, offering services ranging from onsite testing and monitoring, laboratory testing and analysis, to overall environmental compliance consulting and support. With over 60 locations across the US and Canada, the company boasts a stellar reputation for technical excellence and is passionate about empowering the success of its industrial clients and their businesses whilst ensuring a cleaner and more productive world.

To learn more about Alliance’s story and how it delivers industry-leading solutions to its energy clients, Energy, Oil & Gas sits down with Chris LeMay, Chief Executive Officer, who shares insight into the company’s secrets to longevity and success in light of its 25th anniversary.

“We never set out to be the biggest; we were focused on being the best,” LeMay reflects. “That meant building a team with deep expertise, putting the right systems in place and growing in a way that allowed us to stay true to our mission: to deliver consistent, reliable and integrated solutions that help clients operate with confidence.”

Central to Alliance’s ability to scale while maintaining high service standards is its focus on people, process and technology – a mantra LeMay strongly emphasized throughout our conversation. ATLAS – a proprietary tech-enabled solution developed in-house – provides Alliance with real-time visibility into field operations, resource allocation and job performance across its on-site testing and monitoring vertical, which has been essential in Alliance’s growth into the premier field environmental solutions partner for industrial and energy clients.

“ATLAS gives us visibility and control at scale,” LeMay explains. “It allows our teams to be more efficient, more responsive and more accountable, especially when coordinating more than 1000 field professionals across multiple sites and business units. That’s a big differentiator in how we operate.”

Closely entwined with technology are Alliance’s processes and zest for continuous improvement. An example of this growth mindset came with Alliance’s recent acquisition of Slipstream, a leading provider of engine testing services to the upstream and midstream markets.

“Whenever we acquire a business, we try to learn about their secret sauce and whether the overall company can benefit,” LeMay said. “When we acquired Slipstream, we quickly realized we didn’t just acquire an exceptional team and client base, but also an approach to engine testing that was superior to the one we developed. We’re now working to move the Alliance teams to this approach and benefit all our clients as a result.”

Beyond services and systems, Alliance’s growth is rooted in its focus on people. With nearly 2,200 employees, the company has been recognized as a Great Place to Work®, reflecting a strong emphasis on talent development, leadership accountability, and performance recognition.

“We’ve acquired great talent over the years and have invested heavily in developing them,” says LeMay. “Our culture rewards execution, encourages collaboration and gives people the opportunity to grow. That’s been critical to our success.”

The other people Alliance is committed to are its clients. Responding to the demand for more integrated solutions, Alliance has expanded its offerings over time, from stack testing alone to a broader suite of onsite testing and monitoring – including fugitive emissions monitoring and Continuous Emissions Monitoring Systems (CEMS) – and ambient capabilities. The company has built a national environmental laboratory network to provide clients with more options for on-time analytical services while strengthening the connection between field operations and the final technical report. Included within this lab network are oil and gas labs, which are critical for clients transacting in the renewable natural gas and landfill gas markets.

“We asked our clients what they needed more of, and they told us that they’d like more lab testing support that could move at their pace, with better integration, so that’s what we built. We’re continuing to invest in that model because we know it’s adding value,” LeMay shares.

As it celebrates 25 years in business, it’s clear that Alliance is committed to building forward. With planned expansion further into North America and potentially into Europe and other geographies, the company remains focused on scaling its capabilities without compromising the client experience. Most recently, in fact, Alliance is proud to announce the acquisition of ESC Spectrum, a leader in CEMS and Data Acquisition Systems (DAS), now making it the largest CEMS and DAS provider in the world. Such expansion continues to provide new opportunities to showcase Alliance’s end-to-end offering for energy and industrial clients – all with that same client centric approach.

“By focusing on solving real problems over meeting requirements, we’ve built a business that can scale, and that’s exactly what we’re doing.” LeMay concludes. “Whether we’re supporting a single facility or an enterprise-wide compliance program, our goal is the same: to deliver our solutions with integrity, precision, and purpose.

“We’ve earned the right to grow because we’ve stayed focused on doing the right things the right way. That’s what our clients count on, and that’s what we’ll keep delivering.”
