Delivering reliability, innovation, and safety, Seneca Companies provides end-to-end fueling solutions across the US

Seneca Companies (Seneca) was founded by Chris Risewick in 1972, with a vision to deliver real value to customers in the petroleum industry through supplying quality equipment, innovative service and dependable construction of fueling sites.

With almost five decades of proven experience, the Seneca team has advanced that founding vision, expanding capabilities and evolving into a multifaceted service provider. Today, the team is proud to offer ‘The Complete Solution’ of services through its seven distinct divisions and ten office locations.

“Chris quite literally started the business out of the trunk of his car, selling hoses and nozzles,” begins Darren Binning, President and COO. “Over the next five a construction worker kneeling on the ground outdoors, engaged in a manual task involving a pipe and a concrete base decades, we grew steadily through strong partnerships with our customers, following them across the United States, listening closely to their needs, and surrounding them with the services they demanded. That customer-centric approach allowed us to expand from our roots in petroleum services into environmental services, fuel quality, regulatory compliance, and general contracting. Each of those areas grew organically from understanding and responding to what our customers needed most.

“When Trive Capital, a private equity firm, that had already formed OWL™ Services looked at acquiring Seneca, I think they saw a company with a well-rounded service offering built around our core competency: fueling systems. We serve not only the retail convenience store market but also the commercial fueling and fleet industries. What made the partnership with OWL Services (OWL) so compelling is that Seneca brought a depth of expertise that complemented the other companies already in the OWL family. Together, we’ve been able to enhance each other’s offerings and create something even stronger,” he elaborates.

“Of course, integration brings change. Seneca was a family-owned company for over 50 years, and many of us, me included, have been here for decades. Our people and our customers are like extended family. So, while this transition has been significant, our team has embraced it with enthusiasm and resilience. We’ve learned to communicate better, to build new relationships across the organization, and to recognize the immense expertise within the broader OWL group. Now, we’re seeing that momentum build. The collaboration, efficiency, and shared purpose are really starting to take hold and we’re just getting started.”

Reliable, responsive service

Each of the companies acquired by Trive Capital to build OWL began as a family-owned business, and many of those original owners and founders remain deeply involved today. That legacy has helped preserve a strong family-style culture across the organization. “Many of our best and brightest people are still here, and after working together for years, we truly see one another as family,” Darren continues.

“Growth requires adjustment. The pace is faster, expectations are higher, and data and reporting tools are more visible and immediate than ever before. But that transparency is a positive evolution; it drives accountability and helps everyone see the bigger picture. We’ve maintained our close-knit culture while embracing a more dynamic, data-driven way of working.”

Although known as an established leader in the petroleum industry, Seneca is made up of several divisions working together to serve a wide array of industries’ needs, each consisting of an experienced and knowledgeable team, focused on delivering prompt, full-service specialty solutions.

“Whether retail, commercial, or municipal, if our customers’ operations involve petroleum, electric vehicles, compressed natural gas, solar or other emerging technologies, Seneca is here to support for as much of the process as needed. We can get involved from the earliest design stages, serve as general contractor, and take a project from a bare piece of land all the way to handing over the keys to a brand-new facility, or equally, we can step in at any point in between,” Darren explains.

“Our projects range in scale from smaller remodels of $10,000 to major developments of $10 million or more, including large truck stops and airport fueling systems. We work with many national brands and often collaborate with other industry partners to deliver specialized services where needed.

“While the big builds attract attention, our true focus is on what comes after: the service. Our goal is to be a brand-agnostic, national service provider, capable of supporting any fueling system or equipment, anywhere in the country. Wherever our customers need us, we want to be there, offering reliable, responsive service long after the project is complete.”

Efficiency and excellence

When companies are integrated, each brings its own hardware and software platforms; some are advanced, others less so. “Seneca was already quite sophisticated in our use of systems, processes, and technology,” Darren shares, “but being part of OWL has taken that to another level. Our business intelligence tools are extremely powerful, supported by in-house IT design engineers who can create dashboards and data solutions in days, not weeks. That gives our teams real-time access to the information that drives performance.

“I’ve always believed in tracking results consistently and using data to improve. The tools we now have don’t just report data; they highlight trends and anomalies automatically, helping us make better decisions faster. We’re also exploring AI responsibly, identifying where it can add the most value across our operations.

A technician wearing a high-visibility vest and hard hat is installing a security camera on the exterior brick wall of a building“On the field side, OWL’s proprietary AccuMeasure technology is a state-of-the-art calibration system that ensures fueling accuracy and regulatory compliance, guaranteeing customers get exactly what they pay for. We’ve also developed advanced fuel-quality and polishing systems that remove contaminants, water, and bacteria from stored fuel. These technologies serve everyone from local fueling stations to major data centers, ensuring reliability where it matters most.”

To deliver this breadth of service, Seneca places safety at the core of its operations. Working with fuel systems is inherently hazardous, from chemicals to electrical risks, and the company emphasizes rigorous training and awareness. Every field project begins with a daily safety meeting to review potential risks and preventive measures. Additionally, with over 1500 technicians driving millions of miles annually, Seneca employs fleet management and safety coordinators to ensure adherence to highway regulations and best practices.

“While no two projects are exactly alike, Seneca adheres to a defined standard that drives both efficiency and excellence. Technical training, both in the classroom and on-site, is essential to consistently deliver high-quality work. While each project may look different, the quality, safety, and dependability of the products and services remain consistently exceptional.

“Right now,” Darren shares, “our focus is on managing our volume of work safely and efficiently while staying on schedule for our customers. We’re also preparing for budgeting season, which is a major undertaking for an organization of our size and growth trajectory. Looking ahead, our vision is to remain a leading provider across all fueling systems, whether petroleum, electric vehicles, compressed natural gas, or even emerging hydrogen technologies.

“We’re the largest EV installation and service company in the US, and while political shifts may impact the pace, the market continues to grow annually. Compliance testing and service construction will remain key, but our broader focus is delivering reliable, adaptable fueling solutions for the evolving energy landscape,” he concludes.
