ECS Global Wire and Cable
On a high wire
ECS Global Wire and Cable, based in the UAE, is a division of international cabling and wiring company ECS Electrical Cable Supply.
Providing services to a number of sectors including the energy, data communication, oil, gas and marine industries; the company has grown during its 26-year existence from a small, single-branched supplier to an international business with an annual turnover in excess of $100 million.
Founded in 1984 in Vancouver, Canada, by Mohammed Mohseni, the company had within four years opened further branches in Calgary, Victoria, Toronto, Hamilton and Montreal. The Middle East subsidiary of ECS Global was established in 2004 to take advantage of the increasing prominence of industry in the area. Located in Dubai, today the headquarters is a newly constructed state-of-the-art warehouse in Jebel Ali Free Zone, with a further fourteen offices located across four countries in the region. Formerly named DME Cables, the name was changed in May 2010 as part of a strategy to bring the Middle East division closer to the North American division.
The recently built new facility in Dubai is a custom 7400 square metre warehouse designed to withstand severe weather conditions whilst offering optimal storage conditions for the company’s inventory. It additionally houses brand new cable cutting machines as well as fully computerised stock management software to ensure accurate information is available to its clients. The company has also opened a sales office in Qatar during the past year whilst continuing to look for further opportunities in the Gulf Cooperative Council (GCC) region.
Working with clients in the Middle East, North Africa and Caspian Independent States markets, the company has a wide portfolio of cables available to the oil and gas industry including standardised halogen free and mud resistant offshore, BS6883, onshore plant, EPR insulated and special application cables. Having selected high quality products from manufacturers around the world, it has a team of engineers and technicians to assist customers in creating the most appropriate solution for their needs.
A significant, 90 per cent portion of ESC Global’s suppliers are European because many of its own clients desire European quality standards, but it also counts South East Asian and North American-based suppliers for land rig components. The company also has its own range of data communication cables under the DME Prolink name. Also listed is a wide range of industry-specific, specialised items amongst its stock.
The company offers services to accompany its products, delivering packages that are tailored to each individual client. These services include project planning and design, product procurement, cost management, inventory storage and all necessary documentation needed to meet supply chain requirements. It also provides ongoing post-purchase support at the request of clients. In doing this, ECS Global stands by its philosophy of developing long-term partnerships that help clients manage the growing scale of projects. The Project Response Team was set up to aid this, providing rapid and knowledgeable response to client enquiries and requests.
The company recently obtained contracts to supply instrumentation, control, power and data cables for a FPSO ship named Aquila. This vessel, which is being built in the UAE by Italian shipbuilder Saipem, is a $1 billion project that will be moored at the Aquila oil field in the Adriatic Sea. It will produce 12,000 barrels of oil per day and have a total storage capacity of 700,000 barrels. As an ongoing 20-year project launching in 2011, Saipem has specifically recruited ECS Global because of its reliability and ability in delivering quality solutions.
Consistent quality is achieved through the company’s dedication to staff training and development. Alongside the recruitment of specialist professionals, ECS Global engages its 131 staff in rigorous training programmes that ensure employees stay sharp not only with their skills but in teamwork, pride and initiative. The recent obtaining of ISO 9001:2008 accreditation from TUV-Nord represents a culmination of the company’s efforts to maintain the best infrastructure possible. This is further guided by the company’s motto, ‘Our success is measured only by the success of our clients’.
Already having had incredible success since its founding in 2004, ECS Global has established itself as a major supplier of industrial cables throughout the Middle East. Having cracked a number of regional markets, the next area it is looking to tackle is Saudi Arabia, from which is hopes to expand further into the GCC. New projects, alongside ongoing contracts and returning customers, look set to help the company achieve its goal of becoming the region’s most successful wire and cable distributor.
