For years, the Alaska LNG project has occupied a unique place in North America’s energy landscape. It has been presented as a solution to monetize vast North Slope gas reserves, strengthen long-term energy security and position Alaska as a major supplier to global liquefied natural gas markets. Yet one question has consistently overshadowed the project: how much will it actually cost?

That question moved closer to an answer when Glenfarne released its first detailed public cost range for the development. The company estimates the full project could cost between $44.5 billion and $54.5 billion, placing it among the largest energy infrastructure developments currently under consideration in the United States. The disclosure arrives at a critical stage as policymakers, investors and potential customers seek greater clarity on the project’s economics and long-term viability.

Why Glenfarne’s updated cost estimate changes the conversation

Large energy projects often live or die based on confidence in their economics. Until now, public discussion around Alaska LNG has largely been driven by broad estimates, historical assumptions and political ambitions. Glenfarne’s latest figures introduce a more concrete framework for evaluating the opportunity.

The company estimates the first phase of the development, centered on the pipeline system, will cost between $13.2 billion and $16.9 billion. The wider project includes an approximately 800-mile pipeline connecting North Slope gas resources to a liquefaction and export facility in Nikiski.

The scale of the investment immediately attracts attention. Even at the lower end of the projected range, Alaska LNG ranks among the most ambitious energy developments proposed in North America during the past decade. Such figures inevitably raise questions about financing, construction risk and commercial returns.

At the same time, the publication of cost estimates may help advance discussions with investors and prospective LNG buyers. Infrastructure projects of this magnitude require long planning horizons, substantial capital commitments and confidence that project assumptions are grounded in realistic market conditions. Greater transparency offers stakeholders a clearer basis for assessing risk.

The release also reflects increasing pressure from lawmakers seeking additional detail before considering tax incentives and other forms of support. Public officials have repeatedly emphasized the need to understand the project’s economics before making decisions that could affect state finances and energy consumers.

The economic case for unlocking Alaska’s stranded gas resources

Supporters of Alaska LNG argue that the project’s size reflects the equally large opportunity it seeks to capture.

Alaska’s North Slope contains substantial natural gas resources that have remained largely undeveloped for export markets. The project is designed to transport roughly 3.5 billion cubic feet of gas per day from producing regions to Southcentral Alaska, where the gas would be processed and shipped as LNG to international customers.

Global demand remains a central part of the investment case. Asian markets continue to rely heavily on imported LNG, particularly countries seeking supply diversification and long-term energy security. Buyers increasingly look for stable jurisdictions capable of delivering reliable volumes over decades rather than years.

For Alaska, the project carries significance beyond exports. Proponents argue that new infrastructure could help address future in-state gas supply concerns while supporting employment, construction activity and economic development across multiple regions of the state.

The project’s strategic location is also frequently highlighted. Alaska sits closer to key Asian markets than many Gulf Coast export facilities, potentially providing shipping advantages under certain market conditions. While transportation economics represent only one factor in LNG competitiveness, proximity to end users can influence long-term commercial decisions.

Why financing and execution remain the project’s defining tests

The publication of cost estimates may answer some questions, but it also sharpens focus on the challenges that remain.

Energy megaprojects have a long history of cost overruns. Consultants advising Alaska lawmakers recently pointed to research showing that many large LNG developments exceeded original budgets, in some cases by substantial margins.

Inflation presents another variable. Construction materials, labor costs and supply chain pressures have all increased significantly across global infrastructure markets in recent years. Projects with multiyear construction timelines must account for changing economic conditions that can affect budgets long after initial estimates are released.

Commercial execution represents an equally important consideration. LNG facilities require long-term customer agreements to support financing and provide revenue certainty. Investors will be watching closely for evidence that Glenfarne can secure binding commitments from buyers and partners capable of supporting development.

Political support also remains a factor. Legislative debates in Alaska continue to focus on taxpayer exposure, ratepayer protections and the broader economic impact of the project. Glenfarne has sought to reassure policymakers that cost overruns would not be transferred to the state or consumers, but scrutiny remains intense as discussions continue.

Glenfarne’s estimates provide a clearer starting point for those conversations. Whether the project ultimately proceeds as envisioned will depend less on the scale of Alaska’s gas resources and more on the industry’s ability to transform one of North America’s most ambitious energy proposals into a financially and operationally achievable reality.
