Montrose Environmental Group tackles the planet’s toughest challenges by turning emissions data into actionable intelligence
Thanks to its powerful global presence, in-depth local expertise and regulatory insight, Montrose Environmental Group (Montrose) excels in providing comprehensive environmental consulting services that range from environmental testing and remediation to proactive interventions. The company’s purpose is to advance our way of life while protecting the integrity of our environment. We discuss Montrose’s evolution and the scope of its services with Jared Metcalf, Senior Vice President of Operations.
“Montrose is built around a powerful mission for planet and progress, helping clients solve their most important environmental challenges while still having a business impact. This means that we help solve the most pressing environmental challenges with accuracy, integrity, and innovation. Since our inception, we have grown from a small group of specialized teams into a global and multidisciplinary environmental company renowned for our scientific rigor and forward-thinking solutions. While our history is rooted in technical excellence, our evolution has been defined by our willingness to innovate. Today, we operate across hundreds of offices worldwide, delivering the expertise, technology and real world execution required to support cleaner, safer and more sustainable operations for our clients,” he begins.

Jared tells us about Montrose’s range of services in greater detail. “The environmental challenges our clients face rarely fit cleanly into a single service category. Emissions management, for example, is not just a monitoring issue or compliance issue. It is an operational problem that spans across detection, analysis, reporting, and long-term strategic planning. To support that, we offer one of the largest and most comprehensive environmental service portfolios in the industry, encompassing air measurement, leak detection, emissions monitoring, permitting, remediation, lab testing, and advanced environmental data solutions. In the energy sector, this includes supporting both traditional oil and gas operations as well as the renewable energy market. We partner with operators on OGI-based leak detection and traditional Method 21 Leak Detection and Repair (LDAR) monitoring, along with continuous monitoring through sensor networks. Additionally, we monitor flare performance, conduct combustion testing, and quantify emissions. We also support renewable natural gas initiatives, particularly in water treatment facilities that capture methane. Moreover, we provide robust water filtration products and comprehensive air emissions monitoring. While our market presence is quite broad, the energy sector remains a focal point for us, as it is where a lot of the transformative environmental innovations are happening and our ability to blend technology with field expertise allows us to deliver immediate value in this area,” he elaborates.
Focus on technology
As a business focused on innovation, technology is at the top of the agenda for Montrose. Indeed, technology empowers the company to reimagine what environmental compliance can look like, something the entire Montrose team is deeply passionate about. Recently, Montrose has expanded the deployment of integrated total Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) sensor networks in conjunction with its intelligent Enterprise Data Platform (EDP), creating real-time visibility into emissions events and dramatically reducing the time between detection and response. This advancement not only improves environmental outcomes but also drives cost efficiencies and safer operations. Furthermore, Montrose is transforming its OGI workflows by utilizing advanced camera systems, analytics, and automated reporting tools. These innovations help operators monitor more effectively and make confident decisions backed by data.
Constantly innovating and refining its operations, Montrose is currently pursuing several exciting developments that Jared is keen to discuss. “One of our biggest initiatives at the moment is the strategic alignment of our OGI LDAR and real-time ambient air divisions into a unified operating framework. This integration strengthens the client experience and unlocks new ways to combine traditional services with the modern monitoring technology that I mentioned earlier. Additionally, we have made major investments in expanding our emissions analytics capabilities, which will enable clients to consolidate multiple streams of environmental data into a single platform. This advancement is a crucial step toward transforming compliance from a reactive obligation into a proactive strategy, providing clients with a strong competitive advantage,” he enlightens.

With a presence and clients all around the world, Montrose is dedicated to engaging and driving change in its communities. “We are committed to being a positive force in the communities where we live and work by encouraging our team members to participate in environmental cleanups, STEM education initiatives, and employee-led volunteer programs. Ultimately, our objective is to support and foster local causes that align with our mission and values. Our teams frequently engage in hands-on projects that promote environmental health and community resilience. For us, ESG is not just about reporting; it is about actively participating in meaningful activities within our communities and the industry,” Jared describes.
This community focus is closely aligned with Montrose’s overall company culture, which is both strong and inclusive. “Our culture is all about empowering our teams, and its strength comes from the depth of expertise within those teams. Scientists, engineers, field technicians, software developers, project managers and business leaders all play very important roles, united by a genuine passion for solving environmental challenges. Furthermore, we foster an inclusive culture by emphasizing transparency, actively listening to our employees and giving them the autonomy to lead. Much of our recent success has come from empowering local teams to innovate and reorganizing around talent rather than titles. We also reward those who drive operational excellence. But most importantly, we recognize that culture is built day by day in the field, and we work hard to ensure that our people always feel valued, safe and supported,” Jared ends.
Montrose epitomizes how innovation and community engagement can drive sustainable progress. By leveraging its global presence and advanced technology while fostering a strong and inclusive culture, the firm not only addresses pressing environmental challenges but also empowers its teams. This holistic approach positions Montrose as a leader in creating a cleaner and safer future for all.
