Part of Matrix Group, Matrix Networks’ end-to-end utility solutions bring complex infrastructure projects to life

Matrix Networks (Matrix) is a specialist multi-utility infrastructure provider, installing electricity, gas, and water networks across the UK. Matrix Networks was established in 2006 as an independent connection provider (ICP) primarily focused on high voltage electrical infrastructure. Known for delivering complex, high voltage (HV) and extra high voltage large-scale projects, the company’s targeted sectors include distribution parks, data centers, and high-rise city center developments.

network operator (IDNO) and a licensed network owner and operator adopting electricity assets. Matrix Water, on the other hand, the newest addition to the group in 2024, is a New Appointment and Variation (NAV), adopting water and wastewater networks.

Nearing on two decades of experience in bringing major complex projects to life, Matrix is clearly a trusted partner. Focusing on delivery and value, the company gets involved early in the design process to truly understand customer requirements and tailor the right solution for its customers. As Matrix Group also boasts its own IDNO, the company can help offset construction costs, providing a range of flexible and affordable solutions. Matrix also collaborates with customers on the topic of sustainability to help them achieve their own goals as we work towards a net-zero future.

Nic Fuller, Managing Director, joins us to elaborate on the company’s operations. “Matrix is built around providing a customer-focused alternative to existing players in the market,” he opens. “We deliver engineered solutions tailored to our customers’ requirements, in conjunction with transparent quotations with price certainty options, clear programmes, and progress reports – and we stay close to every project.

“As our customer demand grew, our capabilities were expanded to offer multi-utility connections, adding gas and water infrastructure to coincide with the UK’s drive for competition in utilities, the growing need for single-source multi-utility providers in the construction sector, and asset adoption in addition to asset construction. Matrix has expanded its offices over the years to meet our customer requirements, including in the Midlands and the South. Today, we operate across the UK, with offices strategically positioned across the country to enable us to respond to our customers’ growth.”

Agile operations

Turning to applications, Nic continues: “We initially worked on large-scale data centers and industrial or commercial utility infrastructure schemes across the UK. In recent years, we’ve taken the same design and delivery approach into expanding markets such as schools, hospitals, prisons, and offices. Through Matrix Networks, UK Power Distribution, and Matrix Water we provide end-to-end services including design, installation, adoption, and operation of multi utility assets.

“We’ve grown from delivering 11kV connections on sites such as schools, hospitals, leisure centers, prisons, offices, and EV charging stations, to successfully managing projects up to 132kV. Our expertise and bespoke design solutions that established us in the large-scale HV market now span the full scope of new build HV projects across the UK. With each project, we continue to learn and adapt to ever-changing market conditions. The depth of knowledge we’ve built in HV over the years positions us strongly to compete, and with our in-house partners we remain agile and responsive to both design and operational technical queries.”

In terms of Matrix Group, the Group has recently expanded into the water network sector as a New Appointment and Variation (NAV). “This development enables Matrix Networks to deliver the same bespoke, agile, and flexible solution that our customers have enjoyed from us with electric,” Nic explains. “This expansion opens new opportunities requiring efficient water network design and installation. Matrix Water complements our existing services and strengthens Matrix Networks’ ability to offer complete, end-to-end utility infrastructure solutions.”

Critical large-scale projects

Committed to the UK’s decarbonization efforts, Matrix has a strong relationship with its majority shareholder, Macquarie Capital Principal Finance (Macquarie), which is part of the global financial services firm, Macquarie Group, one of the world’s largest infrastructure investors. “Matrix benefits from having Macquarie as its shareholder as we have the backing of a global investment company,” Nic states. “This allows us to offer the bespoke flexible solutions our customers need whilst having the backing of a large investor to make things happen. Macquarie has an in-depth knowledge of utilities and decarbonization across the globe, allowing us to continue to bring world-class solutions to our customers. We’ve enhanced our ability to finance and deliver critical large-scale projects in the UK and been able to draw on their experience across the globe on achieving decarbonization ambitions.”

Considering the purpose of Matrix, its ESG strategy is built around three key pillars: prioritizing safety and minimizing risk across its work; supporting, developing, and empowering its people; and working with suppliers to deliver sustainable solutions. The first aspect around safety also plays a key role in the overall company culture, as Nic explains.

Culture inevitably evolves, but we take time to reflect on our successes as a group to further embed our values and celebrate our people. As we continue to grow, we’re embedding our strong culture across the group to align with how we live and breathe our values each and every day.”

Expanded offering

With a growth plan concentrated on further market opportunities and a reputation for successfully delivering projects on time, Matrix Networks is sure to continue its current trajectory into 2026 and beyond. “We have a new Group CEO, Nicola Hindle, and a new UK Government, both of which are focusing on invigorating the construction sector,” he shares.

“There are exciting times ahead for Matrix as we transition from our traditional large HV customer base and expand our offering into the other sectors,” Nic concludes. “Over the next five years, our vision is to be the leading end-to-end construction, owner, and operator of complex utility assets across our existing core market and new target sectors, with a strong base of loyal customers who truly value what Matrix brings.”
