Phoenix Technology Services Inc.

Phoenix Technology Services has become one of the most dominant horizontal and directional drilling providers in the industry. Its focus on bringing to the market fit for purpose technology that is capable of withstanding harsh drilling conditions combined with its attention to service delivery are key elements of its recent success.

“The technology we provide is designed by our research and development team, and manufactured, assembled and maintained internally,” says Craig Brown, vice president of international operations for the Calgary-based company. “This allows us to manage the full quality chain. We see this as one of our competitive advantages.”

The company provides horizontal and directional drilling services and equipment for major oil and gas companies operating wells in North America, South America, Eastern Europe and Russia. Together, Phoenix has drilled more than 18,000 wells since its founding in 1995.

Directional Drilling Expertise
Phoenix’s equipment and services are designed to help producers keep their costs down and eliminate unnecessary downtime. “We’ve been able to focus on developing technology that is fit-for-purpose,” Brown says. This is where the company’s research and development team comes in. For example, its 360 MWD tools are designed to withstand harsh down hole environments as operators push to drill wells further, faster and more aggressively, Communications Manager Jeanine Youde-Arora says.

“Unconventional oil and gas operations often have razor-thin margins, and hence they demand improved performance, and this plays well into the strengths of Phoenix,” Brown adds.

To complement the new 360 MWD platform, Phoenix is introducing new technologies like its 360CV and 36020/20 that bring conventional directional and logging measurements closer to the bit, reducing uncertainty and allowing the rig-based team to drill a smoother and less tortuous well.

Internal Development
In addition to equipment performance, Phoenix knows its reputation as a reliable service provider rests in the hands of its personnel. Therefore it has fostered an internal culture not only focused on innovation, but also on training and development, Brown says.

This is achieved in part through the company’s internal learning center, which incorporates classroom training, web based learning and practical examinations that help develop employees.

Customer service and safety also are emphasized and strengthened through the company’s professional development programs. “At the end of the day the customer drives our business, and because of that we are a very customer-focused organization,” Brown adds. “Customer service is a big part of how we think and who we are.”

Phoenix is committed to maintaining a safe work environment for its employees that exceeds industry and provincial standards. The company has maintained a certificate of recognition for its safety program through the Alberta provincial government for more than 10 years.

“Phoenix is all about the right people, running the right technology delivering unsurpassed directional performance,” Brown says. EMI
