SMS group can draw on more than 150 years of experience in ring and wheel rolling, with expertise going back to the Wagner Maschinenfabrik and to the Keller & Banning Maschinenfabrik und Eisengießerei. These two pioneering companies were founded in the second half of the 19th century and later acquired by SMS. Today SMS group’s ring and wheel rolling activities stand for innovative technology, precision and consistently high quality. More than 550 ring rolling machines, over 100 complete plants and satisfied business partners all over the world underline the company’s leading position.
PORTFOLIO
SMS group offers customised solutions for demanding applications in ring production. The portfolio extends from individual machines, such as ring blank presses, ring rolling machines and ring expanders up to complete and fully automated lines with the product-specific production technology. The modular system design offers a wide variety of possibilities, customised tooling and various technological concepts for ring rolling process control.
AUTOMATION
SMS group has almost completely automated the ring rolling machines and optimised them down to the last detail. The company combines advanced mechanical and hydraulic engineering with modern computer control. This allows SMS to fully exploit the machine’s capacity and at the same time ensure a high level of plant availability. Customers are thus able to achieve better quality and productivity with low energy, material and personnel costs.
PRODUCTS
Applications of the ring-rolled products extend from antifriction bearings in all forms, to the aerospace industry, to crawler-mounted and rail-bound vehicles. The highest precision levels are required when it comes to gearbox and machine construction, and maximum load-bearing capacity is a must for tank (shell) and vessel construction. Rings are likewise indispensable in power plants, in the oil and gas industry and in the chemicals industry e.g. pipe connectors, welding-neck flanges, slip-on flanges, blind flanges and rings for ball valves.
Further examples of profiled rolled rings are connecting flanges for wind turbines. Newly developed technologies allow material savings of up to 30 percent compared with the conventional production methods.
