SPEX Services creates new ‘Decom’ division
SPEX Decom was recently established by Aberdeen-based specialist explosives provider SPEX Services, to meet the growing demand for expert, innovative decommissioning services.
Through providing a range of severance technologies, including hydro abrasive cutting, mechanical cutting systems and diamond wire cutting technologies, SPEX Decom offers a truly ‘best in class’ portfolio to clients.
Each member of the SPEX Decom team, from management to field staff, has extensive experience in several areas of decommissioning, having worked on many major projects worldwide, allowing the company to offer a unique breadth and depth of expertise with all technologies.
SPEX Services already possesses an impressive track record in the precision use of explosives above and below water, as well as down hole for well abandonments. Further, the company has the in-house expertise to carry out decommissioning studies, comparative assessments, formulate procedures and provide full services.
Heading up the new division is Eddie Grant, who has been appointed decommissioning manager and who brings a wealth of experience with him to the position. Throughout the 25 years he has worked within the oil and gas decommissioning sector, Eddie has held a number of senior management positions with major companies, including Weatherford and Cutting Underwater Technologies (CUT UK).
With specialist expertise in diamond wire, hydro abrasive and mechanical cutting technologies, Eddie’s work has seen him involved in projects in, primarily, the UK North Sea and the Middle East, Asia Pacific and the Gulf of Mexico.
Further bolstering SPEX Services’ already talented team, Andy MacDonald has now joined the company as an account manager from Continental Europe at Workstrings International, where he held a sales engineer role.
Eddie commented on his appointment: “I am delighted to be joining such a fast growing and forward thinking company as SPEX Services. This new role is an extremely exciting opportunity, which will provide me with the chance to use the significant market experience I have gained over the years in the challenging decommissioning market.
“As a company, SPEX has vast experience in the offshore environment and has created a formidable team that can offer a complete decommissioning package to the industry and I look forward to playing my part in its continued success and growth.”
SPEX’s bespoke testing facility at Tillyfourie, located 18 miles from Aberdeen, is fully equipped to execute hydro abrasive, diamond wire and mechanical test cuttingon behalf of clients. Occupying a total area of 38 acres, the site is the largest underwater test facility in Scotland, with two deepwater (90ft & 25ft) test pools containing over 100 million litres of freshwater.
SPEX Services is set to further utilise the facility, with a range of external courses to be delivered on the site. The location will provide a unique experience for participants of the company’s soon to be launched training and explosive awareness sessions.
Spex Services/SPEX Decom will be exhibiting at Offshore Europe at Aberdeen’s Exhibition & Conference Centre (AECC) in the Scottish Pavilion, from September 6th to 8th. An active member of Decom North Sea, SPEX will also be attending the joint Decom North Sea and Oil & Gas UK decommissioning conference, being held in Dunblane from October 6th to 8th.
